🎭 Audition Notice: Our PRemier Play of Season 2

The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 by John Bishop

Join Soda City Theatre Company’s second season starting with a madcap mystery filled with secret passages, eccentric theater personalities, and the notorious “Stage Door Slasher!” Set in a snowbound mansion in December 1940, this fast-paced comedy spoofing classic murder mysteries promises laughter, twists, and plenty of theatrical fun, keeping everyone guessing until the final curtain.

About the Production

When a wealthy heiress gathers the creative team behind a ill-fated Broadway musical for a new backer’s audition, the visitors find themselves trapped in her mansion during a blizzard with an apparent murderer in their midst.

Character Breakdown

(All roles are adult; no child or teen parts available. Ages are flexible and relative.)

  • Elsa von Grossenknueten (Female, 30s–50s): Eccentric millionaire and arts patron. Quirky, bold, and convinced espionage runs in her blood.
  • Michael Kelly (Male, 20s–50s): No-nonsense undercover detective. The only sane person in the room.
  • Patrick O’Reilly (Male, 20s–40s): Irish tenor with secrets. Must handle Irish, German, and New York Italian accents.
  • Ken De La Maize (Male, 30s+): Bombastic, name-dropping theater director. Full of himself and “gone Hollywood.”
  • Nikki Crandall (Female, 20s–30s): Chorus girl with hidden depths. Athletic, charming, and smarter than she appears.
  • Eddie McCuen (Male, 20s–30s): Timid comedian turned unlikely hero. Quick with jokes, even if they don’t always land.
  • Marjorie Baverstock (Female, 40s+): Over-the-top Broadway producer. Theatrical, flamboyant, and fond of made-up words.
  • Roger Hopewell (Male, 30s+): Sarcastic, quick-witted composer. Probably gay. Must be musical or a convincing faker.
  • Bernice Roth (Female, 30s+): Neurotic, perpetually tipsy lyricist. Emotional and prone to fainting.
  • Helsa Wenzel (Female or Male, 20s+): Elsa’s German maid who is murdered early but appears throughout as an imposter. Twin brother twist may require casting both a female and male presenting actor.

The production encourages performers of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, body types, and abilities to audition.
